Faith Formation

img_Faith FormationWelcome!

For faith to be fully alive, it needs opportunities to grow. Our Faith Development ministries provide support and information for people at any age or point in their faith journeys. Parish resources are here to support the individuals and their companions (whether parents, sponsors, or friends), so that they can be encouraged in their spiritual growth.

UPCOMING ACTIVITIES:

Would you like to share the Faith? We are in need of catechists for our religious education programs. We have several programs, Club Noah, our Sunday program which meets twice a month, sacramental preparation which meets from October through March on Saturday afternoons, and our life long program which has three events. We provide training for all these experiences. If you are interested in finding out more please contact our Faith Formation office at 458-3041. We look forward to hearing from you.

Should we have Vacation Bible School? We are interested in your opinion about Holy Cross offering a Catholic Vacation Bible School this summer. Interest cards are available in the church office, and in the back of the church. Please fill out an interest card and return it to the Faith Formation Office or place it in the collection basket. Thank you!

Holy Cross School

Holy Cross School is a ministry of Holy Cross Parish. We seek to enrich our students’ lives by providing them a vibrant and comprehensive experience of living faith and a strong and challenging academic curriculum. Relying on the prayers of all our parishioners, Holy Cross School is grateful to minister to children and families in the name of the parish.

Holy Cross School is looking forward to celebrating its 150th year of service to Santa Cruz in 2012. Founded in 1862 by the Daughters of Charity and transferred into the care of the Adrian Dominicans in 1944, Holy Cross School offers a Catholic Education to the families of Holy Cross Parish and the surrounding communities. We proudly look back on our history, and today we eagerly continue to seek better ways to serve students, families, the faith community, and the world.

Our location, a block from the city center of Santa Cruz on a hilltop graced by the white steeple of Holy Cross Church, emphasizes our connection to both parish and civic life. Our Emmet Street building houses grades Kindergarten through Eight. The High Street site includes our Preschool, Gymnasium, and an athletic field.

Please visit the school’s website at http://www.holycsc.org/ for further information.

Junior High

The Holy Cross Junior High Youth Group meets on Thursday evenings, mid-September through mid-May, from 7:15 to 8:45 p.m. in the basement of 210 High Street (Old High School Building). Our group is open to middle school students who want to meet other Christians their age, to learn more about our shared Catholic faith and the Catholic Church, and to better the understanding of ourselves and the GOD who cares for us.

We participate in parish activities, community service projects, celebrate special holidays, and best of all have food and fun. For more information, please call Kathy Elmore, 423-0369.

Youth Ministry

The High School Group meets on Sunday nights from 6:30 – 8:30 p.m. for a combination of fun, faith-sharing, education, prayer and service activities. In order to form a stronger teen community at Holy Cross, all high school teens will meet at the same time. A monthly bulletin with a calendar of events is published and available on the Sunday preceding the beginning of each month in the back of the Church. We also have a space to announce youth related activities in the weekly parish bulletin (Youth Ministry Corner) and in the kiosk outside of the Church. Please see the youth ministry website for more details.

For more information about Youth Ministry at Holy Cross, please contact Mary Sue Babb in the Youth Ministry Office, 459-7540. or via email at msbabb55@aol.com.

Adult Education

Faith formation is a lifelong process. It does not end with reception of sacraments; rather, the sacraments are the beginning and the foundation of our faith. Seasonal Bible Study groups explore the wisdom and applications of sacred Scripture. Book study groups delve into special texts to enhance our faith understanding. Past adult education experiences have featured distinguished speakers covering a wide range of topics, from world religions to the changes of the Second Vatican Council to contemporary justice and family issues. We also have examined some particularly challenging areas in our "Catholics With Questions" and "Take A Second Look" sessions, for people who have been away from the Church for whatever reason or who might have difficult questions or situations that need to be addressed. In all these, everyone grows immensely and discovers our God in new ways.

Club Noah

During our 11 o'clock Mass and our Spanish 12:30 Mass we offer a play/preschool experience for our young parishners. Located in our parish preschool this is a time for youngsters between 3 and 5 to enjoy a safe play environment, experience a brief faith circle, and enjoy a small snack while their families attend Mass at our church. Registration is handled on-site and a donation is requested to help defry replacement costs of consumable items and classroom materials. We do not offer this service during the summer.

Rite of Christian Initiation -- Becoming Catholic

A wonderful journey of faith awaits those adults thinking of becoming Catholic. It is also available for adults who were baptized Catholic but never received the sacraments of Eucharist and Confirmation. Our team of presenters and companions journey with those inquiring into the Catholic faith, who then might choose to participate in the Rites of Christian Initiation. This process covers many months and a wealth of topics and spiritual experiences, reaching its high point at the Easter Vigil Mass, when adults are received into the Catholic Church and celebrate the sacraments of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation, as they have requested and prepared. It is a joyous experience for all involved!

Religious Education

Sunday mornings from 9:15 to 10:45 school age children from Kindergarten to fifth grade attend a lectionary based religious education program from October until May. We encourage families to follow up this religious education with attendance at our 11:00 Mass which offers Children's Liturgy of the Word in our Mission Chapel for children from the age of 5 to 9. We also offer Children's Missals in the church to help them follow along with the order of the Mass. Registration for classes occurs in Spring during the Easter Season. Please contact our Faith Formation office at (831) 458-3041 for further information.
